The interior of a reverse osmosis membrane element, being dark and moist, is an excellent breeding ground for microorganisms. When RO membrane elements are used, tested, or operated intermittently, they will probably be exposed to bacteria. During shutdown or storage periods of more than a few days, membrane elements should be disinfected or sterilized (sometimes called "pickled") by filling the system with a biocidal solution. Up to 40 percent product flow loss can occur from biological fouling in elements and modules that have been tested on non-sterile water, then stored on the shelf or in non-operating units for long periods.
Use after cleaning your system with our Membrane Cleaning Cartridge - Scale and Membrane Cleaning Cartridge - Organics to prevent biological growth in your RO membrane elements during storage, shipping, or system shutdowns. This solution will not adversely affect membrane product flow or performance.
Simply exchange the 10" pre-filter cartridge in your system with a preserving cartridge. Follow the instructions. Restart your desalinator. Your system is preserved for up to six months of shutdown.
