Details:

The SPADE High Performance Anchor is manufactured in three materials (Steel, Aluminium, and Stainless Steel), and in many sizes. Hi-tensile steel versions are hot-dip galvanized. All SPADE anchors of the same size, regardless of the material they are made of, will work with the same efficiency.

  • Does the aluminum SPADE Anchor have the same holding power as the steel version of the same size?

Holding power of an anchor has very little relation to its weight. Holding power has a much closer relation to the shape and size of the effective surface area of the anchor's blade. Each of the SPADE Anchor models has the same effective surface area, whether it be made of steel or aluminum, so each anchor will have the same holding power. Several independent tests, by nautical magazines, have confirmed that our aluminum anchors hold with exactly the same power as the steel version of the same size although it is important to note that we only recommend the use of an aluminum anchor as a secondary anchor.

  • Does your aluminum model have the same weight distribution as your steel one?

All of the SPADE Anchor models, regardless of material, are well balanced. With nearly 50% of the anchor's total weight in its tip, the SPADE Anchor has the best penetration qualities of the designs presently available.

  • Does the lighter weight of an aluminum SPADE Anchor mean that it will not penetrate as well as a steel version of the same size?

The model in steel will dig in slightly more readily than the equivalent aluminum version. However, due to its superior design, which gives 50% of the weight in the tip, an aluminum SPADE Anchor will have better penetration qualities than most other types of steel anchors of the equivalent size (which, because of the materials, will be twice the weight of the aluminum SPADE Anchor). We remind you that once set, the aluminum SPADE will have the same holding power as the steel SPADE. Both will be far superior to other types of anchors of equivalent size.

Marine grade aluminum alloy is used, and its resistance is less than that of steel. Therefore, we use heavier grades to compensate. But, we will always suggest using the steel model as a main anchor and the aluminum one as a secondary or stern anchor.

  • Following your recommendation, what would be the best use of the aluminum SPADE Anchor?

We suggest using the aluminum model as a secondary or stern anchor; or as a main anchor for a lightweight catamaran; or if you frequently race; or if you have a large boat with no electric windlass.

Note: Plow shaped anchors are designed to plow the sea floor, as they move through it - hence the name. SPADE Anchors by name, and by action, dig deeply into the sea floor. Once they are buried in the sea floor, the concave shape of SPADE Anchors is designed to compact the sea floor, and thus not to move! This design is unique.

Seven Safety Criteria (Summary)

At SPADE, they never refer to an anchor’s weight, but rather to its effective surface area. The remarkable efficiency of a SPADE Anchor is due to the size, and shape, of its effective surface : SPADE Anchors of the same surface area will have the same holding power, no matter the material they are made of. All models meet the seven safety criteria:

  1. The anchor must dig in rapidly, regardless of the type of sea bottom.
  2. The anchor must bury itself deeply within the bottom.
  3. Once set, the anchor must give the maximum holding power without dragging.
  4. If the traction force exceeds the bottom holding characteristics, the anchor must offer constant, and maximum, resistance to dragging - even if it moves under extreme load.
  5. The anchor must keep on holding, regardless of the shift in direction of either the wind or the current.
  6. The anchor design must not allow the anchor rode to become snagged by the anchor.
  7. The anchor must be built strongly enough to withstand very high loads.

Tests show that the SPADE Anchor has much better holding characteristics than the traditional plow-type anchors such as CQR, Delta, or Bruce. The curved shank also makes the SPADE Anchor self-launching, even with a heavy chain to pull out of the chain locker.
