The Balmar XT-CR-170-K6 and XT-CR-170-J10 charging kits are a great way to boost energy generation while under way in your cruising yacht. The ability to produce 2.1-2.6 kW at cruising speed helps charge your batteries in a hurry.
If you are charging lithium batteries (LiFePO4) we strongly suggest adding an APM-12 Alternator Protection Module to absorb transient voltage spikes that can occur if the Battery Management System (BMS) disconnects the batteries to prevent over-charging.
A helpful feature of the Balmar charging kit is that it includes an Alternator Temperature Sensor (
MC-TS-A) that, when properly installed, prevents overheating of the alternator. The default setting in the included
MaxCharge voltage regulator keeps the alternator at or below 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit) to greatly extend the life of your charging system. The regulator achieves this temperature control by reducing field voltage a little at a time as the alternator heats up. Make sure the alternator is well-ventilated to maximize output.
